Welcome to my blog. I am excited to interact with my classmates in EDUC-6165.

The person in my life that I feel is competence in communication is my good friend Libby. Some of the communication skills I want to model after her would be her ability to listen to understand instead of listening to respond. She clarifies what you are saying to make sure she understands what you are saying. She doesn't just into advice mode immediately. She first asks question to help you think about what you are saying. She points out your strengths and the things you are doing to focus on the solution not the problem. She is very easy to talk to,  she is not judgemental and allows you to be comfortable and be yourself. She is someone I go to for honest and compassionate feedback. We worked together at one time in the early childhood classroom and she was an amazing person that could read me and respected my unique ways.

Week 3 blog assignment

For this assignment I interviewed my best friend, my sister and one of my co-workers. They are all from diverse backgrounds.

My friend explained culture as sex, race, religious etc. Her definition of diversity included food, dialect, and belief’s.

My sister previously held a position as a police officer. She defined diversity as differences. She said this could be differences in race, beliefs, academic background, environment growing up, economics, or even in character.

My first co-worker defined culture as the region in which you live, the type of food you eat and your style of clothes. Her definition of diversity is that of your temperament, education, possibly your strengths and weakness.

It was interesting to hear each person’s thoughts on what they felt diversity and culture included. Some of their answers were typical and what everyone would think. Such as the above the surface things; sex, religion, clothes etc. My sister seemed to have a much deeper understanding of culture as being everything about us is included in our culture.

Listening to others definition makes me want to explain what I have learned about the depths of what makes up our culture. It also makes me want to share my culture with them. It shows me how much more there is to learn about respecting the culture of others.

 Week 2

I don’t want to imagine something so difficult happening to my family, but for assignment sake. If had to flee to another county with three items that I hold dear to me and that represent my family culture they would be my bible, a photo album of my most prized family pictures and my sense of hope and joy.

I had a difficult time trying to decide what to bring with me as I fled the country, the reason is my family culture is based on more than material things. The culture that I grew up in and that I tried to raise my kids in is of love, kindness, respect and hope. My bible would be my most cherished possession that I would want to keep. I would be considered a picture hoarder due to the number I take and have. I have learned the hard way that sometimes that is all you have left to hold on to. As far as my hope and joy, it is what keeps me going.

I would be devastated to give up any of my possessions, but I will place my pictures in my bible and no one can take away my hope and joy unless I allow them too.

The insights of this assignment was I first thought of the immigrants that have innocently had to flee to their county and what a hard decision they must have had deciding what to leave behind. I thought about all of the things that are important to me that I would only hope I would keep in the depths of my heart for memory sake. I battled fear as I thought of the worry I would have of losing someone I loved or something I treasured. I also realize that what we would each decide to bring would be as different as our culture's are.

My first co-worker defined culture as the region in which you live, the type of food you eat and your style of clothes. Her definition of diversity is that of your temperament, education, possibly your strengths and weakness.

My second co-worker defined culture to include everything, such as traditions, dress, communication be it verbal or nonverbal, everything about you and your family style. He defined diversity as perceived differences within a group in society.

It was interesting to hear each person’s thoughts on what they felt diversity and culture included. Some of their answers were typical and what everyone would think. Such as the above the surface things; sex, religion, clothes etc. The last person interviewed seemed to have a much deeper understanding of culture as being everything about us is included in our culture.

Week 8

My simulation is important not just to the early childhood field but to the families and society as a whole. When children form positive bonds, healthy attachments to their primary caregivers it builds a sense of security within in a child. It also assists with the beginning stages of building resilience that will continue to benefit the child into adulthood. The lack of a positive healthy attachment can cause hindrances to a child's social emotional development and can be very harmful to the child.

This simulation would benefit all early childhood professionals, as well as, families, stockholders, and society in general. With the may benefit hopefully being the child.

One way that my perceptions of an early childhood professional has been modified is be realizing how much knowledge one needs to take in all of the important studies that affect children to best do the job they are called to do. I have a better understanding of the importance of the career choice of an early childhood professional.

Finally I have enjoyed this class and feel like I have gained so much information from the text, the lessons and from the input of my fellow colleagues. Thank you for the amazing posts and comments that I have read. Good luck on your future courses.

Week 5
I enjoy reading about other countries and their approaches to early education. I attended a NAEYC and was enlightened as to how even though we speak different languages, have different ways of looking at early childhood and have different cultural values we are all on the same team. We are all trying to give children the best start in life as possible.

Some of the topics I found that are current research topics are inclusions of children with special needs, affects of stress and violence in young children and meeting the cultural learning needs of young children. All of these topic are also current topics here in the US.

I chose to look at Australia and their early childhood programing. I found it interesting how much focus of children's rights are looked at. All countries don't consider the rights and voice of the children as should be. Also the intensive programing for inclusion and support for professionals that are in the classroom. The support and understanding of inclusion is so refreshing. Inclusion is so much more than just putting children in the early childhood classroom, their needs to be support and a plan of how to ensure positive outcomes for children as well as education for professionals.

I found the resources for the families beneficial on this site as well.
